PHYSICAL EXAMINATION AND LABORATORY


Physical Exam: The patient displays considerable anxiety and facial expressions of pain. He is alert and cooperative. His temperature, pulse and respiratory rate are normal, but his sitting blood pressure is 164/96. A repeat measurement taken 15 minutes later shows a blood pressure of 158/98. The patient's weight is 190 lbs. and his height is 5'10". The physical exam findings in all the body systems are unremarkable.

Laboratory: Routine blood chemistries were within the normal range.

Electrocardiogram: The ECG obtained from the emergency room showed left ventricular hypertrophy, left atrial enlargement, and digitalis effect.

Review the ECG and determine whether or not you agree with the interpretation. Should the patient be continued on digitalis?

Review the diagnosis and management plan. Were the social and cultural barriers to hypertension control adequately addressed in the counseling and education plan? If not, how could the plan be improved?
