madonna - music
Corey E. Devine
Seductress. Spiritual guru. Ghetto cowgirl? Madonna has done it once again on Music, this time with the help of a bizarre dance edge from William Orbit and futuristic beats courtesy of French pop musician Mirwais Ahmadzai.
Harder than Ray of Light but with more reflective balladry, the image chameleon drenches herself in French techno - and it works.
Producer Ahmadzai consistently cranks out a rigid beat and softens it at the edges with electro-funk squiggles. The patterns are sometimes so intricate that you lose the lyrics altogether, but considering the quality of these lyrics, it's an easy thing to do.
Madonna combines new funky sounds with her most throwaway, inane lyrics in years. On the second track, "Impressive Instant," Madonna wants to "singy singy singy like a bird on the wingy wingy wingy." Though the beat in this track would inspire the least dance-inclined to get up and groove, you're forced to ask yourself what the hell she's talking about.
Even the ballads are a bit dance-y, but at least the lyrics have more meaningful, melancholy undertones.
If you never liked Madonna's music before, there's a completely new purr under the hood of this album. If you've followed her through thick and thin, you'll quickly find yourself tapping out the beats with your brand new cowboy boots. Either way, Music makes the people come together, and it satisfies them all.
