Where do I put my organization's web page?

In a sense, you may create web pages for your student organization wherever you wish (and wherever you have access to a World-Wide Web server). No matter where a web page is created, it can be linked to from any other web page at Rice as necessary.

Here are the most likely locations to consider:

  • Under a personal home page: under the individual Unix account of one of your organization's officers on Owlnet, the RUF, or elsewhere. This is the quickest and easiest way to get your group's web page up and running. For instructions, see: Quick Start: How to Create a Personal Home Page at Rice.

Hint: you'll want your organization's page to be in a subdirectory under the personal web page of the person who creates it.

  • In a "departmental" account: Originally departmental accounts on the RUF were only for formal academic or administrative departments, but in practice their definition has broadened to include student organizations. Your faculty advisor will need to apply as the owner of the account and students who maintain the web page will get access by being added to a Unix group which has access to its pages. For instructions, see: How to Create a Departmental Web Page.

Need a permanent URL? If you are concerned about continuity for your student organization's web page as its location changes over the years, you may request that a "redirect" be set up on the RiceInfo web server. This would create a permanent URL for your organization like:

    http://www.rice.edu/your-org-name
When you move your organization's web page you will have to ask that the redirect be changed accordingly. To request that a redirect be created or updated, send e-mail to webserv@rice.edu.

Questions? Like any rules of thumb, these recommendations are subject to exceptions. You may still have questions about where to create your pages or how best to make them fit in the overall scheme of the web at Rice. If so, please send your questions to webserv@rice.edu.

And be sure to let the maintainers of the Departments, Student Organizations, or other pertinent pages in RiceInfo know when your pages are ready to be listed there.
