Imploded urban space often seems more the by-product of some urban chain reaction than the result of a conscious act of design and planning.

A residual effect rather than a prescribed quality, imploded space is impossible to identify and categorize in conventional terms. Its irregularity and vast extent often preempt isolation, identification and traditional classification. Associating imploded space with designed or constructed space (a category inclusive of the great urban places of the world) seems unlikely.

The imploded space of the contemporary city is without effective taxonomy, so much so that it is impossible to construct a critical language commensurate with the urban phenomenon. Moreover, it is impossible to recognize that a taxonomy of contemporary urban space is even missing. It is for this reason that its qualities remain everywhere apparent yet subsequently unthought and unseen.
